Facedown in Fishtown
Published in Paperback by 9mm Press (21 March, 2002)
Author: James P. Miller
Average review score:

Facedown in Fishtown is brilliant!
J.P. Miller has an interesting background. He spent twenty-one years in Naval Intelligence as an expert cryptologist, which makes him eminently suited to create mysteries and puzzles. He is also a linguist, skydiver, and traveler. His areas of expertise also include criminal justice and medicine. He presently teaches aviation survival to pilots and aircrews.

Detective D.J. O'Hara operates out of the 12th District in the Northeast corner of Philadelphia. He's been on the force almost long enough to retire, and is presently dating and considering marriage to Kristen, who is trying to extricate herself from an abusive husband. Life is going fairly well, until a serial killer begins his spree in D.J.'s territory. D.J. narrates the story, and he includes lots of refreshing tidbits about police procedural that are entertaining and informative for the reader:

"It wasn't surprising that Ray didn't discover a cartridge case. The killer's weapon was probably a revolver, and revolvers don't eject the bullet case. Another explanation was simply that the perp picked it up. However, when someone commits murder, they usually don't take time to retrieve the hardware. After firing they get the hell out of Dodge."

D.J. is, thankfully, not an alcoholic. Please, writers, stop that overused convention! He is a cuddly but tough cop who has already "made his reputation." He has believable, normal problems: a daughter he adores who is probably going to have to move; whether to propose to his girl; how to take care of her abusive ex-husband. These are the things of everyday life that people want to read about. This makes Facedown in Fishtown a readable, fun book. D.J. is just enough of a smart-aleck (his conversations with his partner Manny are hilarious) to be the kind of guy who is engaging and heroic in an ordinary day-by-day way.

J.P. Miller does not shirk on details. Every step of the hunt for a serial killer with enough rage to take on an army is logical. The narrative which takes the reader into the mind of the killer (not an easy thing to do) is also straight-ahead and compelling. Facedown in Fishtown is brilliant!

Details, details, details...
It's the details that get you ... the author's obvious familiarity with forensics and the worldwide locations keeps you engrosed. I'm looking forward to more from this author.

Great mystery that is a fast read and a thrilling ride!
Miller is a gifted storyteller whose powerful narrative unfolds through his vivid depictions of an inner-city Philadelphia cop and a seemingly unsolvable mystery that takes the reader from the City of Brotherly Love to the streets of beautiful Bucharest.
Miller spins a riveting tale of gritty Philadelphia cop, DJ O'Hara as he trails a peculiar serial killer. The short chapters make this a fast read and a thrilling ride! This is a great read!!

A Hunger for Healing : The Twelve Steps as a Classic Model for Christian Spiritual Growth
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (September, 1992)
Author: J. Keith Miller
Average review score:

A great book for new or old 12-steppers
I read this book after I had worked through the steps, but I wish I had read it before. Miller does a great job breaking down each step and applying it to his own life. If you thought the steps were just for alcoholics, think again. This book will open your mind to behaviors that keep you stuck in the insanities of life. If your new to the steps or if you have lived them most of your life this book hits the spot.

Will Become a Classic for Christian Recovery
Our church staff recently presented a seven-part message series based on Miller's book and it had a profound impact on our congregation (New Life Christian Church, Centreville, VA, see newlife4me.com). We made the book available for our folks at our information table and it was the best received book we have ever used -- running slightly ahead of Lee Strobel's Case For Christ. It was so popular and there was so much interest in it that the book and the message series led to starting a couple of Celebrate Recovery/Hunger For Healing groups for those working through their own "hurts, habits, and hang-ups," including some who had never acknowledged having a problem other than some vague recognition that there was "sin" in their lives. Miller's book has been a perfect companion for our recovery groups. I highly recommend it for anyone struggeling with control issues -- those willing to admit their own lack of self-sufficiency and ready to return God to his rightful place as Creator and Lord of the Universe.

A deeply Spiritual Way of working the Twelve Steps
A perfect book for you who is working the steps in any Twelve Step Program - AA, Al-Anon, NA, OA or other... The book goes through the steps in a very pedagogic way from a spiritual perspective covering problems related to all kinds of problems of addiction and sin. Problems you can have even after you recovered from your primary disease. In the end of every chapter and step Keith Miller gives you questions to work with. He also covers aspects of sponsorship and problems with drawing lines/boundaries towards others. In doing so he clearly talks from his own experiences as an recovered workaholic and sinner. Gorskis' "Understanding the Twelve Steps" and Joe's & Charlie's "the Big Book Study" gave me an basic understanding of the Twelve Step Program, but this is my favorite book when it comes to getting deeper understanding of lives basic problems and to the spiritual side of the program. I "must" for anyone wanting to grow spiritual, even if they haven't worked the steps before.

Jonathan's Journey

TREMENDOUS
What a tremendous book "Jonathan's Journey" was! Even at the age of 38 years old, I found that it helped ME understand the scarlet thread of love that is woven throughout the Scriptures. I read it to my 7 and 8 year old boys and they laughed and cried right along with me! They loved it and so did I. Take the time to read "Jonathan's Journey"...you'll not want to put it down!

Wonderful
Jonathan's Journey will answer questions about the saving grace of Jesus for the young and old alike. It's illustrations and descriptive content become real and alive to the reader. The words on the cover "Read and Grow Rich" are right on target. Thank you Katherine Bell for a beautiful book that can and will be shared by many Christian readers.

Katherine Bell 3:15
Jonathan's journey is so well written I find it difficult to describe. I have written to the Pope and asked that Katherine Bell be asked to write the next book in the bible - the woman is clearly touched ... by God. In fact I think she has been touched many times and on a regular basis.

The No. 1 Guide to M. I. Hummell Figureines, Plates, More
Published in Paperback by Bristol Park Books (February, 1995)
Author: Robert L. Miller
Average review score:

Hummels are Great!
This book is very well illustrated, well layed-out, easy to use, and the pictures are very beautiful. It's full of information, explains more than I expected, and it is a MUST for Hummel collectors.

Great resource
not only is this a complete guide -- but it is so easy to use -- anyone owning or buying Hummel's should have this -- I only wish I could find Guides like this for my other collectables --

Excellent for Amateurs
Even though it's proclaimed by expert collectors as the absolute source of information about Hummel figurines, Robert Miller's reference work is easy for amateurs as well. He provides insightful guidance in determining value and quality as well as interesting tidbits about production and variations in the figurines. His work is referenced by many sellers in internet auctions, but is also helpful in figuring out just what you already have. As a rank beginner, I had no problem in following his material and ascertaining the value of an inherited collection. It was also useful in helping me determine additions that I wanted to make to the collection.

The Ozark Clan of Elkhead Creek : Memories of Early Life in Northwest Colorado
Published in Paperback by Yellow Cat Publishing (October, 1997)
Author: Irby H. Miller
Average review score:

Superb Stroytelling of Regional History
If you like anecdotal stories about life in the late 1800s/early 1900s, you will like this book. It tells the story of a family that moves from the central ozarks of Missouri to Northwestern Colorado in the 1920s. It is autobiographical in nature, but the author is a superb storyteller and the pictures he paints of life in and around Craig, Colorado during the Great Depression are poignant and vivid. (True for the telling of the trip from Missouri to Colorado, as well.) Anyone who is interested in Colorado history, life during the Great Depression, or simple human interest stories about real poepl in real life will enjoy this book. For those who are not related to the author, the brief sections about family geaneologies might be a little boring, but these are a small part of the book and do not detract from the overall book. If you are from Northwest Colorado, who knows? Your name might be in the book (or at least one of your ancestors). There are also a few stories dating before the life of the author concerning events that were told to him by the people involved.

A great book, makes me want to live on a ranch in Colorado.
Evver wonder what life was like on a Colorado ranch back when the West was still young? This book will make you feel like you were there. Well-written and hard to put down.

The Ozark Clan of Elk Head Creek
Mr. Irby's book tells it like it was with a generous dose of humor. It also has some great genealogy info. You can really feel the cold of those winter nights, the hardships and the good times they all had. A hard book to put down!!

Writings of Leon Trotsky: (1930)
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (June, 1975)
Authors: Leon Trotsky, Joseph Miller, and Iain Fraser
Average review score:

Economic depression, war and working-class leadership
This is one of a 14-volume series of writings by Leon Trotsky, who along with V.I. Lenin was a central leader of the 1917 Russian Revolution. These volumes cover the years 1929-1940, when Trotsky led the political fight world-wide to maintain the continuity of Bolshevik's revolutionary perspective and leadership against the reactionary policies imposed by the Stalinist regime in the Soviet Union. Reading Trotsky carefully, one can learn a lot about history and about today's world, as well as how to apply Marxist methods to orient oneself for working-class political action.

This volume includes more than 100 articles and letters. They cover topics ranging from the economic depression and the rising inter-imperialist tensions leading to World War II, to the Stalinist frame-up trials in the Soviet Union, the Spanish Civil War, and detailed leadership questions posed in workers movements in different countries at the time. These volumes are lively, pointed and have extensive notes and chronologies to aid the reader today.

I'd also recommend some other titles written by Trotsky at this time, including The History of the Russian Revolution, The Fight Against Fascism in Germany, Trade Unions in the Epoch of Imperialist Decay, and The Transitional Program for Socialist Revolution, all available from the same publisher, Pathfinder Press.

Crucial Lessons for Fighting Fascism
This volume contains lessons crucial for those committed to the goal of emancipating working people and oppressed nations.

The workers movement of that time was misled by parties - social democratic and fake communist -- which preferred imperialist "democracy" over workers revolution. This allowed fascism to triumph and, together with "democratic" imperialism, brought us the second world war which slaughtered tens of millions and included the U.S. - supposedly the most "democratic" imperialists - initiating the threat of human extinction with the nuclear bombing of Japan.

Trotsky explains how Lenin's program could have resulted in workers victories over capitalism all over Europe, as well as the overthrow of the murderous Stalin regime and the regeneration of the Soviet Union on a course of world revolution and workers democracy.

Studying Trotsky's writings today is timely as imperialism is again on the march toward fascism and war.

Everything from Frida Kahlo to fighting fascism
You can see why Trotsky was reknown as a fiery public speaker -- he writes with passion, intelligence and friendly, human humour. These pieces written while living in Mexico, staying with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. Correspondence with and about them included here, too. Articles on the eve of World War II, with fascism triumphant in Germany and Italy especially thought-provoking in light of recent developments in France with LePen's electoral showing. He scathingly makes the point in polemic with "our Palestinian friends" (gives you a feel for the international scope of the debate that was raging) that it is meaningless to talk about the fascist danger without addressing the danger of ordinary democratic imperialism. How else, he points out, to join the Indian masses in their quest for independence from the Mother of parliamentary democracy? Unexpectedly fun to browse through and think about.

Not Just for First Grade
I am using this book with my preschool son to reinforce the letters and sounds. This book contains simple, easy to make and learn ideas for games that teach big concepts. There are plenty of ideas to accommodate different learning styles.

Excellent-Both for Fun and Learning
This is a fantastic book by 2 very dedicated professional educators. It is very worthwhile both for its 'fun' interactive activities with your children, and as an extremely valuable educational tool for 'stealth teaching'! (Your child thinks they are just playing, while they are secretly being educated!) We have also found it very useful in helping your child with any learning 'issues', (reading, math, etc.) using enjoyable, interactive activities.

We VERY HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book

A+ Activities is A+ with a Florida Teacher too!
A+ Activities For First grade is a fabulous resource for both parents and teachers. Each of the activties that I am using are easy to present and cost very little. These are two components that mean a lot to a teacher with ltittle extra time and $. Parents have commented that their children love the "extras" presented in this interesting and creative handbook. It's a perfect gift for the holidays. Any teacher or parent will love it. It is adaptable to any age group. A terrific buy too!! My compliments to Naomi Singer and Matt Miller.

Good book of 3DS4 !!!
I start learning 3DS4 using this book and I found it very easy to understand. Anybody who want to learn 3DS should buy it.

Great book for all skill levels
This book is outstanding to learn and to enhance one's knowledge of 3DS4. It is fun to read, and is really quite a page-turner! It is structured so that it holds your attention - i.e. it doesn't linger for 50 pages on one topic and mention another in passing.

It starts with the basics and moves logically to advanced topics, all while using easy-to-follow tutorials. The CDROM comes with some nice textures that are good for making your own scenes.

Plus, in an appendix, it reviews most of the popular IPAS plugins for 3D Studio R4. This reference is useful to determine what software to spend your money on.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE learning 3ds4!

The 3D Studio r4 book
This is the best book of 3D Studio r4, in a couple of weeks you can learn almost everithing, starting with modeling, texturing, animating and scripting.

The Anatomy of Disgust
Published in Hardcover by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1997)
Author: William Ian Miller
Average review score:

Innovative and Insightful
The unique genius of Professor Miller's work lies not in his ability to give new information to the reader. Indeed, most of his observations are instantly recognized by any perceptive reader as being things he or she already knew about the world. The genius of The Anatomy of Disgust, as with his other works, is his ability to recognize fundamental truths that most people never think about at all, or would prefer not to, and to organize these truths into a coherent system by which human behavior can be analyze and understood.
I strongly recommend this book!

All about the difference between YUCK and YUM
One more "I loved it!" review? Yes, and here's goes. Mr. Miller does a marvelous job, writing in laid back but eminently readable prose that is also judiciously scholarly, describing, explaining, or just tossing up speculations about a culturally modified body of reaction that provokes the "Ee~oo,gross!". The subject has been handled before, obviously, judging by all the references he makes to the various studies, some recondite, some classic, including Mary Douglas' and Freud's. The book reads like an intimate seminar, with the author citing immediate examples from his own life, and casually but appropriately pointing out things done by his own children. Miller makes it clear from the get go that his study is necessarily restricted to the study of the phenomenon as shaped and defined by the culture and class to which he belongs: WASP with a roundedly informed grasp of his own tradition and values. In that sense, the book makes no claim to be universal, a disclaimer that stands out as an act of virtue in contrast to much of disgustingly pompous academic sweepers out there. Nonetheless, the author does manage to bowl pretty well, getting a strike here and there in terms of observation concerning the qualities that, for all practical purposes, are universally recognized to be those of the disgusting. I use the term 'universal' as it applies today, what with globalization and all. Yes, coprophagy (eating of feces) is indulged in by some for thrills, but I doubt anyone practices drooling saliva into a cup and then drinking it back up. The author suggests that it may not be too much to credit the invisible structure of human social evolution to the distancing of two points, YUCK and YUM. The culturo-environmental determination of the length between those two points may very well contain much of what it takes to delimit a culture's potential for art, science, and language as well. The book contains what everyone already knows (too well!) but never bothered to articulate for him/herself. There is much here to delight the inner pre-pubescent in us all, but it is a serious book, nevertheless. After all, in the grown-up world, it is not the gooey, slimy stuff so much as the ethical defect in the form of gooey, slimy character and corresponding actions that make us think,"EE~oo! Gross!" A nice companion to Sloterdijk's The Critique of Cynical Reason.

Exceptionlessly outstanding.
I can think of no greater praise to confer upon such a wonderfully erudite, wryly penetrating, and rigorously eloquent book than that Nietzsche's approval of it as a genuine contribution to the genealogy of morality can be readily imagined. Indeed, like his previous, and comparably trenchant, work, "Humiliation," his "Anatomy" deploys etymology, anthropology, social- and individual psychology, history, and inspired scrutiny of 'heroic' literature in order to, as Nietzsche characterized the task in 1887, "decipher" from "what has been documented, what is really ascertainable, what has really existed... the whole long hieroglyphic text... of humanity's moral past."
